Kenya: Controversies emerge over forged academic certificates
Two separate incidents involving forged Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificates have drawn significant attention in Kenya.
Socialite and former nominated senator Karen Nyamu has faced backlash after admitting on social media to assisting a supporter in forging a KCSE certificate. The goal was to facilitate the individual's entry into the National Police Service. The forgery was discovered at Kiganjo Police Training College, resulting in the arrest of the supporter and 17 others.
In a separate legal matter, Margaret Mbugua, a former principal human resources officer at the Kiambu County Assembly, was fined Ksh1.06 million by the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court. Mbugua pleaded guilty to counts including the fraudulent acquisition of public property after using a forged KCSE certificate to secure her position. Investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) revealed she earned approximately Ksh4.9 million in salary through the fraudulent appointment.
