Kenya cross-dressers spark debate over public washroom use

Kenyan hair and makeup artist John Mokuna Mungai, known as Jony the Hairdresser, has defended his decision to use women’s public washrooms, stating that his feminine appearance and voice lead people to perceive him as a woman.

Following Jony’s comments, fellow cross-dresser Kelvin Kinuthia confirmed that he also uses ladies' washrooms, stating that the disclosure provides a sense of relief. The revelations have ignited a public debate regarding gender identity, privacy, and safety in gendered public facilities.

In response to the controversy, TikToker Rakel Kenya has called on the government to intervene. She suggested that authorities consider creating additional categories of public toilets beyond the traditional male and female designations to accommodate individuals with different gender identities, citing concerns for the privacy and safety of women and children in public spaces such as petrol stations and restaurants.
