Kenya DCI warns of forex and crypto scams using social media wealth displays

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has issued a warning to Kenyans regarding online fraud schemes disguised as lucrative opportunities in forex trading, cryptocurrency, arbitrage, and betting. The agency noted that fraudsters frequently use social media to flaunt lavish lifestyles—including luxury cars, expensive drinks, stacks of cash, and international travel—to lure unsuspecting victims into believing they have achieved easy wealth.

According to the DCI, these displays often feature “phantom profit” on digital trading dashboards and glowing wallets to create a false impression of success. The agency identified several criminal methods used in these scams, such as phishing links, fake platforms, identity fraud, deepfakes, and social engineering. The DCI cautioned that individuals drawn into these schemes risk losing their money, while those participating in fraudulent activities may face legal consequences.
