Kenya electricity costs to rise following EPRA tariff adjustments

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced three tariff adjustments that will increase electricity costs for Kenyan consumers in August 2026. The combined increase amounts to approximately KSh4.70 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for meter readings taken during the month.

The adjustments consist of a Fuel Energy Cost Charge of KSh3.51 per kWh, a Foreign Exchange Fluctuation Adjustment of KSh1.1777 per kWh, and a Water Resource Management Authority (WRMA) levy of KSh0.015 per kWh. The fuel energy component, which accounts for the largest portion of the increase, is based on electricity generation and purchase data from July 2026.

EPRA noted that the foreign exchange adjustment reflects exchange-related costs incurred across the electricity supply chain, involving entities such as KenGen and Kenya Power. High fuel displacement charges were specifically recorded at thermal power stations including North Horr, Rhamu, and Baragoi.
