Kenya expands healthcare access through new vision projects and hospital infrastructure

Kenya is implementing several initiatives to expand healthcare access and infrastructure. The Ministry of Health has launched the CBM Vision Impact Scale-Up Project Phase Two, aimed at reaching 1.27 million people with eye, ear, and hearing services. Funded by CBM and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the project focuses on Mombasa, Nakuru, and Kakamega counties to improve screening, treatment, and digital patient tracking.

To support these efforts, the Ministry is establishing 315 Primary Care Networks across 47 counties and finalizing the nation’s first National Healthcare Referral Policy. Additionally, over 100,000 Community Health Promoters have been digitized to assist with early detection and referrals.

In a separate development, the Ministry of Defence is collaborating with the Homa Bay County Government to expand the Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital. The proposed project involves constructing an inpatient complex featuring medical, paediatric, maternity, and surgical wards, as well as laboratory services, to meet the growing demand for specialized care in the region.
