Kenya expands tourism and sports medicine focus amid record revenue

Kenya is experiencing significant growth in its tourism sector and is expanding its strategic focus toward sports and wellness. According to the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, the country welcomed 2.76 million international visitors during the 2025/26 financial year, a 9.8 per cent increase from the previous year. This surge resulted in record tourism revenue of Ksh564 billion, up 18.7 per cent from Ksh476 billion in the prior period.

In alignment with this growth, Kenya is leveraging its reputation in athletics to promote sports tourism. As part of preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania, the government is exploring a sports medicine collaboration with Qatar. Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei recently visited the Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital in Doha to discuss strengthening athlete welfare and injury prevention capabilities ahead of the tournament, which is scheduled for June and July 2027.
