Kenya explores Japanese digital speed camera technology

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the Kenya Police Service are collaborating with Japanese authorities to enhance traffic management and road safety through digital technology. A joint delegation is currently in Japan for intensive operational training, sponsored by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the Safe Systems Approach project.

The training, which runs through October 4, 2026, involves engaging with the Tokyo Metropolitan Police to study advanced traffic management, road safety data, and the use of traffic simulators. A primary focus is the exploration of digital speed camera technology.

This initiative supports Kenya’s rollout of a Ksh45 billion Intelligent Transport System (ITS) in Nairobi. The project aims to transition from manual traffic policing to AI-driven automation to reduce congestion and digitally enforce traffic regulations.
