Kenya government targets HIV, pregnancy, and violence among youth

The Kenyan government has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the ‘triple threat’ facing young people: new HIV infections, adolescent pregnancies, and sexual and gender-based violence.

During a mentorship and advocacy event at Mawego Technical Training Institute in Homa Bay County, Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga emphasized that these interconnected challenges threaten the health, education, and safety of the nation's youth. With adolescents making up approximately 24 percent of Kenya’s population, the government is scaling up prevention and early intervention through Primary Health Care.

Community Health Promoters are being utilized to identify vulnerable adolescents and connect them to HIV testing, reproductive health services, and maternal care. Additionally, the Social Health Authority aims to reduce financial barriers to essential maternal health services for pregnant adolescents. The initiative, supported by the Voice of Children Initiative and presided over by First Lady Rachel Ruto, calls for increased collaboration between schools, families, and government agencies to protect vulnerable youth.
