Kenya governors report security withdrawals amid political tension

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and Siaya Governor James Orengo have reported the withdrawal of their security details, raising concerns regarding police impartiality and the treatment of political critics ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Governor Natembeya stated his security detail was recalled for a second time without prior communication, noting the withdrawal occurred shortly after President William Ruto concluded a tour of Trans Nzoia County. He has called on Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja to provide a formal explanation regarding whether lawful procedures were followed.

Governor Orengo described the withdrawal of his security as a recurring incident following his attendance at a commemoration for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has condemned alleged threats by the National Police Service to arrest Governor Natembeya. Musyoka warned that the opposition would resist any attempts to harass leaders within the United Alternative Government, accusing the current administration of using intimidation tactics against popular political figures.
