Kenya halts sea exports of four avocado varieties

The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) has announced the closure of the avocado harvesting season for sea exports, effective Friday, October 30, 2026. This decision follows a countrywide survey conducted by the Horticultural Crops Directorate, which determined that current production volumes are insufficient to support sea shipments.

The suspension affects four specific varieties: Hass, Fuerte, Pinkerton, and Jumbo. While sea shipments are halted, the AFA stated that exports of these varieties via air will continue, provided they undergo inspection and clearance. Exporters must provide full traceability details for all air-freight consignments.

The directive also impacts avocado oil processors. Those holding oil stocks intended for export during the closed season must request verification by Monday, November 2, 2026. Only stocks verified in advance will be cleared for export.
