Kenya High Court petitioned over disappearance of Tanzanian activist

Vocal Africa has filed an urgent application in the High Court of Kenya seeking the whereabouts of Tanzanian political activist Twaha Mwaipaya, who was allegedly abducted in Kamulu, Nairobi, on October 25, 2026.

Mwaipaya, a member of the opposition party Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) and a critic of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, reportedly fled Tanzania last year seeking asylum. Legal representatives for Vocal Africa are seeking orders requiring Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and DCI Director Mohamed Amin to explain the activist's whereabouts, citing concerns that he may be moved across the border.

Meanwhile, the National Police Service (NPS) has issued a notice dismissing a viral social media document claiming the police had officially launched an investigation into the matter. The NPS stated the purported press statement was fake and urged the public to rely only on official channels. While the police have not issued a formal statement regarding the abduction itself, human rights groups including Amnesty International have raised concerns regarding the incident.
