Kenya removes university degree requirement for 2027 election candidates
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has confirmed that candidates for president, governor, and Member of Parliament will not be required to hold a university degree for the 2027 General Election. This follows court rulings that declared the previous degree requirement in the Elections Act unconstitutional, citing concerns over discrimination and equality. IEBC Commissioner Ann Nderitu noted that the previous rule effectively excluded approximately 96.5% of the population, based on 2019 census data showing only 3.5% of Kenyans held university degrees.
While the requirement is currently removed, any attempt to reintroduce educational qualifications must undergo the formal legislative process, including parliamentary approval and public participation.
