Kenya implements Coffee Act 2026 to expand farmer marketing options

Kenya has implemented the Coffee Act 2026, providing farmers with expanded marketing channels for their produce. Under the new framework, coffee can be sold through the Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE), via direct sales, through international exchanges, or via other channels designated by the Cabinet Secretary.

Henry Kinyua, Chairperson of the Coffee Board of Kenya, stated that the framework aims to strengthen the sector and ensure timely payments to growers. Currently, approximately 80 per cent of Kenyan coffee is marketed through the NCE. Farmers using the exchange benefit from the Direct Settlement System, which facilitates payments directly into growers’ accounts within five days of procurement.

To further support producers, the Coffee Cherry Advance Revolving Fund, administered by the New Kenya Planters’ Cooperative Union (KPCU), allows farmers to access portions of their expected earnings in advance. The Coffee Board is also developing regulations intended to enhance the global profile of Kenyan coffee and maintain its international reputation.
