Kenya institutions warn of political tension and bribery risks for 2027 polls

Kenyan religious, electoral, and security institutions have issued warnings regarding rising tensions and systemic risks ahead of the 2027 General Election. The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) highlighted the ‘monetization of politics’ as being at a ‘crisis level,’ noting that illicit financing is increasingly used to influence voters, candidate selection, and governance.

During a national election security meeting in Nairobi, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), the police, and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) discussed threats including hate speech, misinformation, ethnic polarization, and disputes over multi-billion shilling technology tenders.

IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon addressed unverified claims from political leaders regarding the commission's preparations, stating that such allegations could undermine public trust. The warnings come amid concerns over youth unemployment, economic hardship, and the potential for political violence, drawing parallels to the 2007/08 post-election crisis.
