Kenya integrates satellite technology to monitor reforestation efforts

The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and the Kenya Space Agency (KSA) are collaborating to use satellite imagery and geospatial technology to monitor the country’s forest cover and reforestation progress. This initiative aims to address a critical data gap: while the government has planted over 1.78 billion trees under the Jaza Miti program, current metrics often track planting activity rather than the actual survival rates of the seedlings.

By utilizing Earth observation data, authorities intend to identify vulnerable zones and verify the long-term survival of trees as part of a national strategy to plant 15 billion trees by 2032. This technological oversight is being paired with grassroots efforts from Community Forest Associations (CFAs), which manage the daily nurturing of trees on the ground.

The environmental and economic stakes are high. Kenya loses an average of 84,716 hectares of forest annually, and current forest cover stands at 8.8%, below the 10% constitutional threshold. Deforestation and degradation are estimated to cause indirect economic losses of approximately 3% of the annual GDP, equivalent to 534 billion shillings, through impacts on water regulation, soil protection, and agricultural production.
