Kenya Wildlife Service probes mass elephant deaths in Amboseli
Between 24 June and 24 July 2026, a sudden mortality event affected 14‑16 elephants in Kenya’s Amboseli National Park region, with carcasses found 15‑30 km from the park’s boundaries. The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) launched an urgent investigation, dispatching veterinary teams and sending tissue samples to the University of Nairobi, the Government Chemist and other laboratories for toxicological and pathological analysis.
Preliminary laboratory results indicated a possible toxic substance; some tests detected cyanide in the animals, while other analyses were negative, leaving the exact cause undetermined. Ten of the dead elephants showed partial paralysis and died within one to two days, and the remaining five carcasses were too decomposed for definitive diagnosis. The victims were predominantly adult females and their calves, with only one adult male recorded, and included individuals of various ages and sexes, suggesting no single family was targeted.
KWS officials, including communications head Duncan Wanyama and Director General Erustus Kanga, emphasized that there is currently no evidence of a risk to human health, though the potential spread of toxins to livestock such as goats and cattle is a concern. The incident marks the first large‑scale elephant mortality in the Amboseli ecosystem in decades, an area that supports over 2,000 elephants according to the Amboseli Trust for Elephants.
