Kenya elephant deaths: Authorities investigate possible cyanide poisoning
Authorities in Kenya are investigating the deaths of approximately 20 elephants in the Amboseli-Kimana ecosystem. The deaths, which began around June 24, have primarily affected adult female elephants and their calves.
Preliminary laboratory analysis by the Kenya Wildlife Service and the University of Nairobi suggests cyanide poisoning from pesticides used in local crops as a probable cause. Investigators are specifically examining whether contaminated tomato crops contributed to the fatalities, as tomato remains were found in some elephant stomachs.
However, the poisoning theory is contested by local Maasai communities and farmers. They argue that no similar deaths have been recorded in humans, livestock, or other wildlife that consume the same crops. Some community members suggest the deaths may be caused by an unknown disease. Two farmers were recently detained in connection with the investigation.
