Kenya confirms first Ebola death in Nairobi following imported case

Kenya has confirmed its first case of Ebola following the death of a 40-year-old man in Nairobi. The patient, a Kenyan citizen who had lived in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) for seven years, tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain. He traveled from the DRC through Uganda before arriving in Nairobi on October 3, 2026, and subsequently passed away at Nairobi Hospital.

Health authorities have initiated intensive contact tracing and containment measures. Approximately 66 individuals, including relatives and healthcare workers, have been placed under quarantine. Authorities are also tracing 23 passengers and four crew members from a Jambojet flight that traveled from Entebbe to Nairobi. While the death has heightened regional health concerns, the Kenyan Ministry of Health maintains that the country is not experiencing a widespread outbreak.

International support has been mobilized, with China providing a KSh259 million grant to bolster containment efforts and India supplying 6,000 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits. The World Health Organization (WHO) is monitoring the situation and has provided testing supplies. Meanwhile, healthcare workers at Nairobi Hospital have expressed concerns regarding the safety and medical necessity of being quarantined in the same hospital wing where the patient was treated.
