Kenya launches national mediation hub for schools and universities

Kenya has launched a national mediation hub to promote peace, preventive security, and alternative dispute resolution within educational institutions. Hosted by the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies at the University of Nairobi, the initiative was developed under the Jukwaa la Wasomi Initiative.

The platform aims to connect over 30,000 school- and campus-based mediation hubs with national government administration officers and agencies. The goal is to provide mechanisms for resolving grievances, addressing mental health challenges, and preventing student unrest through dialogue rather than force.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen noted the timing of the launch is critical as the country approaches its next general election. He emphasized the importance of maintaining calm in campuses where political tensions may rise, urging mediators to act as instruments of peace and civility to prevent students from being manipulated by political actors.
