Kenya Ministry of Defence launches tree-planting initiatives for environmental security

Kenya's Ministry of Defence has launched several tree-growing initiatives to mark National Mazingira Day, framing environmental conservation as a vital component of national security and climate resilience.

In Narok County, Cabinet Secretary for Defence Soipan Tuya led activities at the Narok West Technical Training Institute. She emphasized that environmental stewardship requires sustained nurturing and protection of seedlings rather than just one-day planting events. Meanwhile, in Laikipia County, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Environmental Soldier Programme planted 10,000 indigenous seedlings at Lariak Forest to restore biodiversity and combat climate change effects.

Additionally, the Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC) partnered with various community stakeholders, including the Nairobi Rivers Commission and local educational institutions, for a tree-planting exercise at Thogoto Teachers Training College. These efforts align with the Kenyan government's national target to grow 15 billion trees by 2032.
