Kenya Ministry of Education bans politicians from school visits
Kenya's Ministry of Education has issued a ban on politicians and individuals seeking to provide aid from visiting schools to distribute gifts to students. Education Minister Julius Ogamba stated that such activities are often used for political gain ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Beyond political exploitation, the ministry noted that these visits disrupt academic schedules and jeopardize children's rights. Specifically, concerns were raised regarding the unauthorized taking and sharing of photos and videos of students on social media without parental consent.
In Nyamira County, local education officials reported instances where individuals provided minor donations, such as bread and soda, only to use the opportunity to film students for publicity. While the directive is being implemented nationwide, some local residents in Nyamira have suggested the move may target opposition politicians who frequently provide food to students.
