Kenya motorists threaten protests over rising fuel prices
The Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) has threatened coordinated peaceful protests if the government and the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) do not address concerns regarding rising fuel costs and the petroleum pricing system.
MAK is demanding an independent review of the October-November fuel price adjustments and a comprehensive audit of the controversial Government-to-Government (G-to-G) petroleum importation arrangement. The association is calling for the publication of detailed pricing calculations, including international benchmarks, landed costs, and taxes, to explain recent hikes.
A primary point of contention is the significant increase in kerosene prices, which rose by KSh28.49 per litre, a much higher jump than the increases seen for petrol (KSh12.93) and diesel (KSh9.90). MAK has challenged EPRA to provide evidence that the G-to-G arrangement has actually delivered savings to consumers regarding supplier premiums and financing costs.
