Kenya MPs demand crackdown on rogue auctioneers using gangs

Members of Kenya's National Assembly have called for a crackdown on rogue auctioneers accused of using gangs and excessive force to seize property. During a session of the Public Investments Committee on Governance and Education, lawmakers expressed concern that weak regulation is leaving citizens vulnerable to intimidation, harassment, and financial loss.

The committee, chaired by Luanda MP Dick Maungu, scrutinized the Auctioneers Licensing Board (ALB) regarding its oversight of the sector from the 2018/19 to 2024/25 financial years. Maungu emphasized the need to distinguish legitimate professionals from “quack auctioneers” who utilize unauthorized individuals to overpower citizens during the execution of warrants.

In response, ALB Chief Executive Officer Festus Terer stated that the regulator is working with police leadership to ensure auctioneers utilize lawful security mechanisms rather than private gangs. Terer noted a meeting held in May with Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja to address these challenges and restore order to the profession.
