Kenya officials clash over KPC share sale to Aliko Dangote
Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro and Farouk Kibet, an aide to President William Ruto, have engaged in a heated dispute regarding the sale of Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) shares. Nyoro has alleged that the government is pushing public institutions, including the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and the Public Service Superannuation Fund (PSSF), to sell KPC shares at a loss to a private investor linked to Aliko Dangote’s East Africa refinery.
Nyoro claims these forced sales and rights issues aim to dilute government and NSSF stakes to below 20%, potentially allowing a private entity to secure 51% to 75% control. Reports indicate that Nigerian tycoon Aliko Dangote has acquired a 24.76% stake in KPC for approximately KSh42.5 billion ($327 million) from various government institutions.
In response, Kibet accused Nyoro of spreading propaganda that sabotages government operations and inciting the public. Kibet further called for investigations into Nyoro’s own conduct, alleging involvement in corrupt dealings during his tenure as chair of the National Assembly budget committee, though no evidence was provided.
