Kenya orders unified government messaging to combat misinformation

Kenya's Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service, Felix Koskei, has issued a directive requiring all ministries, state departments, agencies, and state corporations to adopt a unified communication strategy. This move aims to centralize government messaging and combat the spread of misinformation and disinformation.

Under the Government Strategic Communication Policy, 2025, institutions are mandated to shift from reactive to proactive communication. The goal is to ensure that all public entities speak with a single, cohesive voice regarding national policies and development programs. This framework is intended to enhance transparency, protect institutional reputations, and build public trust by providing consistent and accurate information.

Leadership within government entities, including Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries, will be held personally accountable for the communication emanating from their respective institutions. The directive emphasizes that effective communication is a core pillar of governance and public service delivery, rather than an optional support function.
