Kenya Police Service Revamps Structure and Deploys 200 Anti‑Narcotics DCI Officers
The Kenya Police Service announced a revised organisational framework published in the Kenya Subsidiary Legislation 2026, outlining 13 specialised formations. The new structure places the service headquarters at Vigilance House and Jogoo House B in Nairobi and retains units such as the General Service Unit (elite paramilitary wing), Traffic Unit, Presidential Escort Unit, Airports Police Unit, Railways & Ports Police Unit, K‑9 Unit and a newly created Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit, among others.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said 200 newly trained officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations' National Anti‑Narcotics Investigations Bureau will be deployed to counties across Kenya. Working with chiefs, village elders and the National Government Administration Police Unit, the officers will boost enforcement against drug trafficking and substance abuse, following President William Ruto's directive to expand anti‑narcotics capabilities. Murkomen stated, "We have had a drug and substance abuse challenge, and as per the Presidential directives, we have trained 200 DCI officers, and we will now be deploying them across the country to ensure that drug enforcement is handed a boost."
