Kenya police uniform transition sparks procurement scrutiny

The Kenya National Police Service is set to transition to new uniforms, moving away from the dark-blue designs used since 2018. The new attire features a light-blue shirt or blouse paired with deep navy-blue trousers. President William Ruto is expected to officially unveil the new look during a passing-out ceremony for recruits at the National Police Training College in Kiganjo, Nyeri County.

Questions have emerged regarding the procurement process and the identity of the suppliers. While reports identify Nalitex as a firm contracted to supply the outfits, there is ongoing debate regarding transparency and the involvement of influential figures in the multi-billion shilling tender. Previous uniform procurement was noted for utilizing local textile firms in Thika, Kitui, Nakuru, and Eldoret to support domestic industry.

Estimates suggest a complete working uniform set will cost approximately Sh25,000 per officer, while ceremonial regalia is priced at roughly Sh30,000. The initial rollout will include approximately 6,000 graduates, representing a significant financial investment. Once issued, officers will be required to wear the new attire, though jungle uniforms will remain authorized for those in operational areas.
