Homa Bay experiences violence ahead of Linda Mwananchi rally
Violence and civil unrest erupted in Homa Bay, Kenya, on Sunday, August 16, ahead of a political rally organized by the Linda Mwananchi movement. The opposition group, which includes figures such as Edwin Sifuna and James Orengo, is seeking to challenge President William Ruto’s administration ahead of the 2027 elections.
Reports from the scene described chaotic conditions, including the use of machetes, sticks, and makeshift barricades. Groups of men reportedly attacked passersby and snatched valuables, while burning tyres and rubble blocked major thoroughfares. Some political leaders claimed that armed thugs were mobilized to disrupt the procession, though Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga rejected allegations of organized interference.
The National Police Service (NPS) issued a warning to politicians and supporters against incitement and provocation. NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga confirmed that fifteen suspects were arrested on the Kisumu–Kericho Road while in possession of crude weapons, allegedly planning to disrupt political activities. The police have directed officers to remain professional and impartial while maintaining public order during the heightened tensions.
