Kenya Power reports 200% rise in infrastructure vandalism

Kenya Power has reported a 200% surge in vandalism incidents targeting electricity infrastructure over the last three months, including the theft of 37 transformers during that period.

A recent incident occurred around 3 am on a Sunday when a transmission tower along the Naivasha-Juja 132kV double-circuit line collapsed. The collapse caused a power outage through the Ruaraka Substation. Company teams responded by rerouting electricity through alternative substations, restoring supply to affected customers by 4:30 am.

Evidence recovered at the site suggests that the vandals were present at the scene when the tower collapsed. Kenya Power's security team and local police are currently investigating the incident. The company warned that such attacks threaten public safety, disrupt the national electricity supply, and cause significant financial losses.
