Kenya President announces Port of Mombasa expansion and Kilifi development
President William Ruto has announced several major infrastructure and development initiatives in Kenya, focusing on both regional connectivity and national utility access.
In Mombasa, the President unveiled plans to expand and modernize the Port of Mombasa. Utilizing the National Infrastructure Fund, the government aims to rebuild berths 11 to 14 and berths 23 and 24. This expansion is intended to increase the port's capacity from 2.5 million TEUs to 4.5 million TEUs over the next three years, positioning it to serve the East African region and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Additionally, construction of the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone is scheduled to begin in December 2026, with an estimated investment of Ksh70 billion.
In Kilifi County, President Ruto launched various projects including road construction and electricity connectivity programs. The government plans to invest Ksh2 billion this financial year to connect 24,000 homes to electricity in the county. Infrastructure upgrades also include the construction of the 25-kilometre Kakajuni-Matano Manne road at a cost of Ksh1.5 billion and the establishment of the Mazeras Modern Market to provide organized trading spaces for hundreds of vendors.
