Kenya President Ruto to unveil new police uniforms

President William Ruto is scheduled to unveil new uniforms for Kenya’s General Duty police officers this Friday. The unveiling will take place during a passing-out parade for thousands of police recruits at the Kenya Police College in Kiganjo, Nyeri County.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja stated that the decision to change the attire follows a 2023 public participation exercise where both officers and the public rejected the current deep navy-blue uniforms. The National Police Service (NPS) will revert to a previously approved design.

The new uniforms will be worn initially by the graduating officers before being progressively rolled out to all General Duty officers over the coming weeks. Officers in the Administration Police Service and the General Service Unit will maintain their current uniforms for the time being. Kanja described the transition as a “force multiplier” intended to boost officer morale and strengthen public confidence in the institution.
