Kenya probes cyberattack on presidential website as government web hacks rise

Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy confirmed that the official website of the President was hit by a cybersecurity incident. The ICT Authority detected the breach, temporarily restricted access to contain it, and launched a forensic investigation. Officials said there is no evidence of unauthorized data extraction and that government digital services remain operational.

Separate official data show that web‑application attacks on Kenyan government systems and internet service providers jumped 43.7% to 17.4 million in the three months to June 2026. Hackers are targeting authentication credentials, vulnerable browsers and database servers, using techniques such as remote code execution and cross‑site scripting. The surge underscores growing risks to the country’s expanding digital economy and public‑service platforms.
