Kenya Railways to reroute matatus for Nairobi Railway City project

Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has announced plans to restructure matatu operations around Nairobi Central Station to facilitate the construction of the Nairobi Railway City project. The Ksh30 billion development, spanning 438 acres in Nairobi's Central Business District, requires the reorganization of public service vehicle (PSV) services to allow contractors to take possession of the site.

The proposed adjustment strategy includes the establishment of eight designated passenger drop-off zones and two dedicated matatu lanes near the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) station area. Additionally, the Green Park terminus will serve as a holding area for parked vehicles to manage the transition.

To maintain safety and efficiency during the construction phase, KRC plans to implement several infrastructure upgrades, including improved drainage, new road surfacing, the installation of floodlights, enhanced pedestrian safeguards, and clear lane markings. Project manager Milly Kiziili has led stakeholder engagements with PSV operators and government agencies to ensure a transparent implementation process and minimize commuter disruption.
