Kenya mpox outbreak reaches 1,298 cases and 19 deaths

The mpox epidemic in Kenya has expanded to more than 40 counties, with the Kenya Ministry of Health reporting 1,298 confirmed cases and 19 deaths over the last three months.

Mombasa has emerged as the hardest-hit region with 452 cases, followed by Nairobi with 320 cases. The disease is spreading rapidly along major transport corridors and near border crossings. Consequently, authorities have designated seven counties as high-risk zones, including Busia, Makueni, Kiambu, Kilifi, and Nakuru.

In response, the Ministry of Health is intensifying public awareness campaigns, epidemiological surveillance, and testing at border posts. Efforts are also being directed toward vaccination and improved coordination between health authorities to contain the spread. While no Ebola cases have been confirmed, the government remains on alert to prevent the introduction of other infectious diseases.
