Kenya restarts IMF talks for new economic support programme
Kenya has resumed negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) regarding a new support programme. Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) Governor Kamau Thugge announced that an IMF staff team is expected in Nairobi shortly to begin Article IV consultations, which serve as a surveillance tool to monitor the nation's economic and financial policies.
The request for a new programme follows the conclusion of a $3.6 billion deal in April last year, which ended after Kenya failed to meet specific agreed-upon conditions. This previous outcome led the Treasury to exclude IMF loans from national budgets through 2029.
A new agreement could involve stringent conditions, such as reforms to state corporations, spending cuts, increased revenue generation, and new taxes. While the World Bank offers relatively softer terms focused on socioeconomic outcomes like climate change mitigation, it has suggested that the IMF's rigorous reform agenda is critical for Kenya's economic stability.
