Kenya Revenue Authority foils Sh50 million smartphone fraud

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) intercepted a major customs fraud scheme at Eldoret International Airport involving a large consignment of smartphones. The interception prevented a potential revenue loss estimated at Sh50.4 million.

Investigators discovered that the shipment contained 52,607 more ordinary smartphones than were declared. Additionally, 309 high-end devices, including premium models such as the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, and Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max, were completely undeclared. The shipment also included other goods such as clothing, shoes, automotive spare parts, and household items.

The KRA stated that the findings indicate significant concealment and misrepresentation of dutiable goods, which substantially understated the tax obligations for the consignment. The authority attributed the success to its intelligence-led enforcement strategy.
