Kenya Revenue Authority launches new cargo tracking system
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has commenced the rollout of a Multi-Vendor User-Owned Electronic Seals Framework. This new system is designed to improve the monitoring of goods under Customs control, reduce operational delays, and enhance the efficiency of cross-border trade.
Replacing a single-vendor model that has been in place since 2017, the new framework introduces a more flexible and competitive approach to the provision and management of electronic seals (e-seals). Under this arrangement, e-seals will be owned and managed by vendors or users based on specific commercial agreements, allowing cargo owners to select service providers that suit their operational needs.
The transition aims to resolve previous challenges, such as the unavailability of seals at tagging points and the use of aging, suboptimal devices. All electronic seals deployed under this framework will be integrated with the East African Community (EAC) Regional Electronic Cargo Tracking System (RECTS) to ensure real-time monitoring and end-to-end visibility of goods.
