Kenya Revenue Authority intercepts Ksh 8.2M in undeclared iPhones at JKIA

Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) customs officers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) have intercepted 40 undeclared iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max devices valued at approximately Ksh 8.2 million.

The interception followed the detection of suspicious travel patterns by a passenger who had arrived from Dubai and had entered Kenya four times within a nine-day period. The individual admitted to acting as a courier for a client based in Dubai.

The incident has highlighted the distinction between personal effects and commercial imports under Kenyan customs law. While passengers are entitled to a specific allowance for personal or household use, goods intended for resale or exceeding these limits are subject to import duty, VAT, and other levies. KRA has warned travellers against transporting undeclared goods on behalf of third parties.
