Kenya Revenue Authority waives iTax penalties and interest

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced it will waive penalties and interest for taxpayers affected by intermittent downtime on the iTax portal during September 2026. The system disruptions hindered essential services, including tax return filing and payments, at a time when many were attempting to meet statutory deadlines.

The waiver will be applied in accordance with Section 89(5A) of the Tax Procedures Act. KRA clarified that the relief is not a blanket waiver for all taxpayers; instead, the authority will conduct system processes to verify the specific periods when services were unavailable or intermittently inaccessible to ensure only those directly impacted receive relief.

This decision follows previous alerts from the KRA regarding technical interruptions on the online platform. The authority apologized for the inconvenience and stated it is working to restore full functionality to the iTax system.
