Kenya Secures Seat on International Seabed Authority Council (2027‑2030)
Kenya was elected to the Council of the International Seabed Authority for the 2027‑2030 term during the 31st session of the ISA Assembly in Kingston, Jamaica. The Council oversees regulation of mineral‑related activities in the international seabed area beyond national jurisdiction under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei said the election reflects confidence in Kenya’s commitment to rules‑based ocean governance, sustainable management of the common heritage of humankind, maritime scientific research and equitable stewardship. Kenya plans to use its seat to advance the outcomes of the Nairobi Sustainable Blue Economy Conference and the Eleventh Our Ocean Conference, promote the blue‑economy agenda and strengthen environmental safeguards for deep‑sea resources.
