Kenya security officials sued over rising political violence
Human rights organizations, including the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), Katiba Institute, and the Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU), have filed a constitutional petition in the High Court against senior Kenyan security officials. The lawsuit alleges a failure to prevent and investigate escalating political violence and intimidation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The petitioners name Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, the Director-General of the National Intelligence Service Noordin Haji, and the Attorney-General as respondents. The legal action seeks to compel state agencies to investigate attacks on political, civic, and religious gatherings, and to prosecute those responsible for organizing or financing such violence.
Specific incidents cited in the petition include a violent disruption of a KHRC press conference in Nairobi, an attack on a civic discussion at All Saints Cathedral, and reported disruptions of meetings in Homa Bay and Kisumu. Petitioners argue that the failure to act has fostered a culture of impunity and created an environment where citizens fear expressing alternative political opinions.
