Kenya: Senator confirms Uhuru Kenyatta's funding of Linda Mwananchi movement

Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has confirmed allegations that former President Uhuru Kenyatta is providing significant financial support to the Linda Mwananchi political movement. Onyonka stated that the government's claims regarding Kenyatta funding the movement with billions of shillings are true, a development that aligns with assertions made by President William Ruto regarding the 2027 General Election.

The Linda Mwananchi movement, led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, has seen a surge in grassroots popularity following Sifuna's departure from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). The movement's influence has grown through tours in Nairobi and Western Kenya, fueled by the youth-driven slogan ‘Sisi Ndio Sifuna’.

In a related legal development, an anonymous citizen has filed a constitutional petition in the High Court seeking to mandate Sifuna to run for the presidency in 2027. The lawsuit aims to prevent him from accepting a deputy presidential position within a coalition, such as one led by Kalonzo Musyoka, arguing that Sifuna represents the aspirations of ordinary Kenyans and must seek the top office.
