Kenya Speaker suspends MP Ndindi Nyoro over pipeline IPO claims
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has suspended Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro for five sitting days. The suspension follows Nyoro’s refusal to apologize for allegations made during a plenary session regarding the Kenya Pipeline Company initial public offering (IPO).
Nyoro claimed that officials from “the high office” pressured state-linked entities, including the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), the Public Service Superannuation Fund (PSSF), and Kenya Reinsurance Corporation (Kenya Re), to invest in the IPO. He suggested the investment was being forced as the sale neared failure.
During the proceedings, Nyoro declined to withdraw the remarks, stating, “I cannot apologise for saying the truth.” While Nyoro requested two weeks to produce evidence to substantiate his claims, the Speaker ruled that the remarks would be struck from the official record, the Hansard, and that the suspension was necessary to uphold House rules. Under the directive, Nyoro may remain in the chamber but is barred from speaking or participating in any House business during the suspension period.
