Kenya Speaker urges EAC states to meet financial obligations

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called on East African Community (EAC) Partner States to fulfill their financial commitments to ensure the stability of regional integration. Speaking at an extraordinary meeting of the Bureau of EAC Speakers and the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) in Nairobi, Wetang’ula warned that institutional reforms would be ineffective if member states continue to default on their remittances.

Wetang’ula also requested a review of two decisions made by the EAC Heads of State Summit regarding the remuneration and selection of EALA members. He argued that the proposed changes, which would shift the responsibility for paying EALA members to national assemblies starting in December 2027, could raise significant legal and constitutional issues. He suggested these decisions be returned to regional leaders for further scrutiny to ensure compliance with the EAC Treaty and national laws.

Regarding regional activities, Wetang’ula confirmed that Kenya has already honored its financial commitment to the 16th Inter-Parliamentary Games, scheduled for December 2026 in Arusha, Tanzania.
