Kenya teacher unions debate school autonomy and healthcare access

In Kenya, the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) and the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) have expressed differing views regarding the management of Junior Schools. During a public participation exercise in West Pokot, KUPPET officials advocated for Junior Schools to operate autonomously within primary school compounds, led by teachers with post-primary qualifications. KUPPET argues that primary-level educators may lack the expertise to supervise or mentor teachers specializing in secondary education. Conversely, KNUT supports maintaining Junior Schools within comprehensive school structures to ensure a smooth transition for learners.

Separately, the Ministry of Health, the Social Health Authority (SHA), and KUPPET have reached an agreement to improve healthcare access for teachers. Chaired by Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, a consultative meeting addressed the implementation of the Mwalimu Comprehensive Medical Cover. The agreement focuses on expanding access to specialized services, including oncology, IVF, and chronic illness management. To ensure accountability, the Ministry, SHA, KUPPET, and the Teachers Service Commission will implement monthly reporting and take action against healthcare facilities that fail to meet service standards.
