Kenya to import Indian Murrah buffaloes to boost dairy sector

Kenyan farmers have begun applying to import Indian Murrah water buffaloes as the government prepares to introduce the breed into the national livestock sector. Approximately 800 applications have already been received following an announcement by President Ruto.

Principal Secretary for Livestock Development Jonathan Mueke stated that the initial phase will focus on research. The government will first import the animals for use at public facilities, specifically the Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRC), to assess their feeding needs, behavior, and management under Kenyan conditions. The first batch of animals is expected to arrive by the end of 2026, after which access may be opened to private farmers.

The Murrah breed is being introduced to diversify the livestock portfolio and increase milk supply. KAGRC noted that buffalo milk offers significant advantages, including a higher butterfat content—nearly three times that of ordinary cow’s milk—and high protein levels. These characteristics make the milk ideal for producing premium, value-added dairy products such as cheese. The government aims to leverage the breed's resilience to expand opportunities in milk, meat, and leather production.
