Kenya to test AFCON readiness with Bayern Munich vs Ajax friendly
Kenya will host a friendly match between Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam on January 5, 2027, at the Raila Odinga International Stadium. Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya stated the high-profile fixture will serve as a critical test for the country’s readiness to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Organizers intend to use the event to evaluate ticketing systems, security arrangements, transport, emergency evacuation, and immigration procedures. Technical teams from Kenya and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) will also test broadcasting systems to identify and address potential weaknesses.
Separately, the High Court has declined to certify as urgent a petition seeking to halt the match. Six petitioners had moved to court alleging potential constitutional violations regarding the use of public funds for the event. They sought to prevent the government from entering into financial arrangements or contracts related to the match until expenditure compliance is demonstrated.
