Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania's AFCON 2027 hit setback as media chief resigns

Veteran journalist Elias Makori has withdrawn from any role with the local organising committee for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, citing unresolved payment for work on the 2025 CHAN tournament and a lack of professional respect. In a letter to LOC CEO Antony Inzahuli Lung’aho, Makori said operational and logistical challenges, missed CAF deadlines and media decisions made without his input undermined confidence in the tournament’s preparation.

The resignation comes as construction continues on Nairobi’s Raila Odinga International Stadium and refurbishment proceeds at the Moi International Sports Centre, with Nyayo National Stadium slated as a training venue. The co‑hosted AFCON, the first to be held in East Africa, remains scheduled for 19 June–17 July 2027 despite the media leadership crisis.
