Kenya welcomes proposed AGOA extension to 2028

Kenya has welcomed a proposed extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) through December 31, 2028. The extension, which has already been approved by the US Senate, is currently awaiting consideration by the US House of Representatives.

Regina Ombam, the Principal Secretary for Trade, stated that the extension would provide Kenyan exporters with greater certainty and help maintain duty-free access to the United States market. This continuity is expected to particularly benefit the agricultural sector, supporting the tariff-free export of premium products such as tea, coffee, cut flowers, macadamia nuts, and avocados.

The move is viewed as a significant opportunity to strengthen trade relations between Kenya and the United States while encouraging Kenyan businesses to increase their market presence and add value to their exports.
