Kenya Wildlife Service probes cyanide poisoning of 15 elephants in Amboseli
Fifteen elephants were found dead in and around Amboseli National Park in southern Kenya between 24 June and 24 July 2026. Most of the victims were adult females and their calves; ten showed partial paralysis before dying within one to two days. Laboratory analysis of carcass samples detected cyanide residues, and investigators found tomatoes in the stomachs of several animals. The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has opened an investigation, suspecting that the cyanide entered the elephants’ diet via pesticide‑treated tomatoes from nearby farms. KWS officials warned that the toxin could also affect livestock and, potentially, humans, although no direct health risk has been confirmed. The International Fund for Animal Welfare called the incident a “major setback” for one of Africa’s key elephant populations. The inquiry continues with further environmental testing and forensic work.
